4 July 2018

The Royal College of Nursing Norther Ireland awards ceremony was held on the 7th June 2018, at the Culloden Hotel.

The Cancer Nurse Award, sponsored by Cancer Focus and Macmillan Cancer Support winner was Gloria O'Connor, Macmillan Colorectal Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, Western Health and Social Care Trust

Gloria is responsible for the support of patients through their journey from diagnosis of colorectal cancer through to treatment and follow-up. Gloria identified service inefficiencies and embarked upon a process to improve the service provided to patients. She established a nurse-led follow-up clinic for patients, an audit of the service has demonstrated that patients no longer experience a delay whilst waiting for a review appointment. A patient recently highlighted the impact Gloria made on her life, ‘her person- centeredness, insightfulness, professionalism and care stood out’. The change to the review process for patients with colorectal cancer has been transformational for the service, patients and staff in the Western Trust. It would not have happened without Gloria’s vision, commitment and dedication.

Congratulations Gloria from all at UKONS!
