Supporting patients seeking 'non-NICEd' drugs

What are you doing to support patients who are seeking access to ‘non-NICE’d’ drugs and interventions? Are there delays in delivering ‘NICE’d’ drugs to your patients?

We are trying to coordinate a Networkwide approach - so that all clinicians are consistent in their consultations with patients.

No new drugs or interventions will be made available to patients unless they have been through NICE and NICE recommendation is positive. However, for NHS patients, an exceptional case form can be sent to their PCT from their consultants, for consideration of their individual justification. Privately treated patients are able to pay for new drugs and interventions.

The most important issue is consistent information from nurses and all members of the MDT.

I think we all noew accept that drugs will not be funded unless they have been niced. The problem comes of course whem effective drugs will never be niced due to small numbers . The pcts in my area all have a different process for this which irritates the clinicians big time ! I would welcome a consistant approach
